From the Editors

Time and again law enforcement officers have opted for the Police Model since its debut in 1984. Spyderco packs as much blade length as possible into the handle for big cutting power in a slim profile. The Police Model has a David Boye dent cut out of the locking lever allowing you to gorilla grip the knife without accidentally releasing the lock. The blade is hollow-ground VG-10 and thick at the tip for added strength with a weight-reducing swedge along the spine. All stainless, the handle is perfect for engraving or embossing. Steel clip positions the knife for tip-down pocket carry.

Customer Response

Very Good for the Money
I have been carrying the plain edge VG-10 version of this knife for several months and have found it to be excellent for the money. I use it a great deal and have personally found it to keep it's edge reasonably well. It is a surprisingly large knife when unfolded so check your local laws for any restrictions on length. My only complaint is that the placement of the clip holds the knife in such a way that it protrudes fairly noticeably from one's pocket. This makes the knife somewhat less than discreet in street clothing. In fairness however, and in view of the fact that this knife was designed with the law enforcement market in mind, this has likely been done deliberately in order to make deployment easier while wearing gloves. Overall, an excellent choice in my opinion.

Perfect for people with large hands .....
I've carried a "Plain-Edge" for many years...so I will review that knife:

Very long blade ( almost 4-1/4"), super-smooth action, a tight locking mechanism, and the VG-10 steel takes (and holds). a sweet edge...The thin profile (1/4" thick) may take some getting used to....but it's well worth it.

For the same quality in a slightly smaller package, look at the knife my wife carries, the (Stainless) Spyderco "Endura".

Endura 4, Stainless Steel Handle, Plain

One note: Apply some loc-tite to the screws holding the clip on, as they will loosen if you don't.

6-Stars.

Still my favorite knife after 10 years of carry
This knife was given as a gift to me over 10 years ago. I've owned two other spyderco knives, a clipit delica and another I can't name. This is my favorite knife, and I've carried it for many years.

The serrated blade is very effective. I've used the knife for everything from opening cans of pineapple juice to opening envelopes. I've cut myself probably 25 times, a few years ago badly, removing about 1" square of skin from my index finger cutting a branch, in one quick slicing move. I was fortunate that it didn't require stitches (although there is scar tissue). I wouldn't hesitate to use it to defend my life against anything I should come across in the woods, as I would feel confident that the amount of cutting force that I can deliver with this as an extension of my arm would rival anything with claws. The clip is better than the other Spyderco knives I've owned, a simple bent metal affair that doesn't snag on my pocket and won't break.

The action on the knife may be my favorite part. It opens and closes so smoothly, depressing the locking mechanism on the back allows the blade to swing back and forth like a pendulum. When it locks open, there is only the tiniest amount of play side-to-side, probably only now after so many years of use.

I've had the serrated blade sharpened many times on a standard bench, sharpening the back side of the blade is quite effective although the "pits" of the serrations don't get sharpened as well from this. This blade stays sharper longer than any other knife I've owned, which has greatly helped in it's longevity.

The knife is visually intimidating, and if it weren't so darned effective I wouldn't carry it because of this. It's just small enough to be legal in my state.

The weight, feel, and action of this knife inspire confidence in it to this day. I've loved knives since I was 5 years old, and have bought dozens of them, but I don't think I've bought more than a few as trinkets since owning this one. There may be better knives out there, maybe even for less money. But I won't find out because I've got this one.

Dulls just sitting in your pocket.
I am not going to get too technical on stating grades of knife steel, blade design, type of knife and so on and so forth. I am sure if you are buying a knife you are fairly familair with this type of information.

What I am going to review is how does this knife do on a day to day carry basis. First it has a nice apperarance and once you work with it some a fairly smooth action with satisfying clicks on opening and closing.

So why two stars - to put it simple you can sharpen it carry it around a couple of weeks and it feels like you have been sawing rope all day. The upshot to it is I own six Spyderco knives and this is common to all the straight edge models up to my top of the line titanium handle VG 10 blade model. The one little one that has the full serrated edge works very well in being and staying sharp.

All together I own well over a 100 pocket knives running the gamet from Benchmade to Maxxum and this is the only knife line that I have this problem with. So if you are considering a Syderco look at the full or at least partly serrated blade otherwise, unless you have a love affair going with a Lansky sharpner, avoid.

specialized & well-suited to those needs
As the names implies, it is what's now known as a "tactical knife", designed no doubt for law enforcement & military personnel. Its long, relatively straight & slender blade renders it best for slashing & thrusting. It lacks the "belly" for a skinning knife although its sharp point might serve as a "caping" tool for a trophy. Since it's somewhat narrow it might not be the first choice for a heavy-duty survival knife but if pressed into service it should be a big help nonetheless. Since it's over 4" in length it might be illegal in many venues. It would be prudent to check before carrying one in locales where their police are skittish about having anyone not in their profession possessing one. As with nearly all Spyderco products, it is of excellent quality, especially with the newer VG-10 steel.
