Good idea, flawed execution
I bought one of these the minute I first saw it, based on my happiness with the Gerber EAB. Having a small sharp blade with you at all times is just so useful, and the extra tools on the Artifact made it look even more versatile.
Unfortunately, the smaller blade is also less stiff, and a bit more fragile, making this more for slicing paper and tape, and maybe a loose thread. The EAB comes with a contractor-grade utility knife blade, which is stiff enough to go through cardboard, drywall, small sticks, denim, etc. It can also be resharpened easily, or replaced in 15 seconds. The Artifact came with spare blades in a handy little container, but you'll need them if you try to cut anything much heavier than an index card.
The pry bar is neat, and actually useful, but I wish it weren't canted up so high. It makes the tool thicker in a pocket or on a keychain, and can be uncomfortable if pocketed the wrong way. The screwdrivers are actually decent, though, and the bottle opener works just fine.
As others have noted, opening the blade is tricky and prone to accidents. I know the little friction-lock is smaller and fairly secure, but there needs to be a way to open this more safely. I haven't cut myself on it, yet, but I've come close, even being mindful. More aggressive texturing on the blade holder, maybe, or an extension behind the blade to apply leverage?
On balance, this isn't awful for the money, but it could be better. I think I'd recommend something like a Leatherman Micra instead - it's more expensive and bigger, but it has more tools, safer blade opening, and easier pocketability. The loss of the pry bar is a small price to pay, but micro versions are out there, and are flat for better keyring or pocket carry.
Didn't cut to bone
I had been looking for a new bottle opener for my key-chain then figured why not get a small multi tool. I finally settled on this one even tho of all the reviewers who seemed to have cut their thumb with it I figured well since I know a lot of people have cut themselves with it I'll just be extra careful with it and remember not to use the blade if I had previously been using the bottle opener. Well two weeks later I reach into my pocket to get my keys & what do you know, you can add me to the list of victims only I didn't cut my thumb it was my finger also it did not go all the way to the bone although it did bleed quite a bit. Some how the blade worked its way open just a enough in my pocket to expose the razor. With that said I still like this tool & carry it everyday, admittedly I am a little timid when I reach for my keys.
Covers the basics
I purchased this with another batch of orders from another site. I'd give it good credit for being a solid tool, compared to others I have had. You can easily place it on your key chain and not have it weigh you down. Even better, leave it in your tackle box if you need something to cut your line, or have easy access to the bottle opener.
What you have to watch out for is opening the blade. At first glance you think you can have your hand positioned where it encroaches the swing of the blade. Open it with great care the first time you get it to know HOW it opens. After that, you'll have no problem being struck by the blade With it being a pen knife utility blade, it can be replaced with another sharp blade when it wears out. It locks into place, that is something I have not seen with small blades very often!
It is intended as a few essentials only. Be sure this is the one you want. I am happy with what it has.
8+1 Functions: The extra one is for instant blood samples.
I read the other reviews that mentioned that it's easy to cut yourself with the blade and thought "Well, I'm not that stupid plus why did they still give it 5 stars? I'll buy it anyway."
Once I received the Gerber Artifact I immediately tried to open up the blade - being cautious due to what I had read- and, indeed, found it extremely hard to open up. The lock seems to keep the blade arm in place pretty well but it is poorly designed and a pain to get open (one reviewer said he always opens it with a coin). Nevertheless I opened it with all fingers still in tact.
I immediately closed it and found the closing lock to work ok even though they should put some kind of description on the package because it's not that obvious for either locking mechanism. After that I tried out the other tools and they all seem to work pretty well. I was pretty pleased even with the few obvious flaws.
Cut to 15 minutes later: I had to cut out something and jumped at the opportunity to use my new tool. The blade begrudgingly opened and I put it to use. Afterwards I went to close it and the closing mechanism didn't work so I gave it a little pressure to close it - and BAM! sliced my finger to the bone.
Needless to say I am that stupid and the other reviewers were definitely right about this product. Hopefully the good people at Gerber peruse these reviews every once in awhile and start putting their designers to work on Artifact 2.0.
works like a champ. i use it everywhere- a little on the heavy side tho
